The use of social media for nonprofit fundraising is a top-of-mind issue for many nonprofits. Not surprisingly, online giving and social networking trends continue to increase in our sector.
The Blackbaud Index of Online Giving, an excellent resource launched in 2010 that’s updated quarterly, reported that online giving increased by 10 percent in 3rd quarter 2011 in comparison to that period in 2010. It further increased by 3.3 percent in November 2011 to January 2012 compared to that period in 2011.
Nonprofit consultant Neil Edgington of consulting firm Social Velocity direly warns about social nerworking, “Those nonprofits that continue to control the message and the method, that only engage their donors when they need money and ignore the increasingly networked world will wither on the vine.”
