In the last 20 years, we have transformed from a society accustomed to purchasing goods at brick-and-mortar stores with cash and checks to consumers accustomed to making online purchases. The next wave of commerce — mobile commerce— is now growing by leaps and bounds.
Just as the way we make purchases has changed, what we spend money on is also changing. Case in point: Last year, 2,000 gamers each paid around $1,300 for a virtual good known as a “drone” on the free game Dark Orbit. That produced more than $2.6 million in revenue in less than a week.
